Every parent knows it is important to get their kids to eat healthily, and we all know that 5 portions of fruit and veg a day are needed to keep them on track and grow up (as we keep telling them) to be strong and healthy.
But every parent also knows it is amongst the hardest things they will ever do to get their kid to eat their broccoli and peas, let alone that disgusting sprout which is packed full of goodness. So we come up with ingenious ways of hiding these things in other foods we know they will eat. Okay we know chocolate covered fruit isn’t the best thing but at least they are getting some fruit in and if you can get them to eat dark chocolate at the same time it must be better than nothing! Unfortunately this one doesn’t work too well with veg.
There are a few things though that are packed with goodness that most kids will eat and some of these may come as a shock. The first of these is the humble baked bean, yes that’s right. The baked bean is in fact a nutritional powerhouse of protein, fibre, iron and calcium. Even the tomato sauce covering baked beans is a good source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant shown to help prevent heart disease and prostate cancer.
Another of the kids’ favourites that is also beneficial is the yoghurt. This is an easily absorbed source of calcium. It’s also a useful milk substitute for people who can’t digest large amounts of lactose. Yogurt has also been credited with a range of therapeutic benefits, many of which involve the health of the large intestine and the relief of gastrointestinal upsets.
Sweet potatoes are not something most kids are familiar with but they are a great source of Vitamin E which all kids need. Treat them just the same as regular potatoes to add something new and interesting to their diets and watch with a hidden smile as they try to work out if they are for the main or desert!
With a few clever ideas and maybe some surprising foods it is easier than ever to get kids eating what they should be – just don’t tell them!
