Tonight, the same rockers who sang the lyrics, “What ever happened to sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll? Now we just have AIDS, crack and techno” will open up about their addiction at Carnegie Hall’s Redemption Song event in New York City. Steven Adler of Guns N’ Roses will be accompanied by rock royalty: Ace Frehley of KISS, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of RUN-DMC and blues rocker Rickie Lee Jones — all of whom are fellow addicts.
Moderated by Henry Rollins, the evening of readings and songs is sponsored by the Carnegie Hall Notables, a membership and ticket program for music buffs under 40. (But word on the street is they’re not carding if you’re 41 and up.) The event takes place within the storied Carnegie Hall at Zankel Hall, and a $60 ticket gets you into an after-party with a chance to schmooze with the panelists (because after the party is the after-party…and then you know, the hotel lobby).
What, specifically, can you look forward to? How Sarah McLachlan’s song “Angel” saved McDaniels from severe depression and an addiction to prescription pills? Or how Adler was eventually fired from Guns ‘N Roses (and that says something, because I don’t think Slash, Axl Rose and the gang were choir boys) and recovered on reality television, appearing on both the second season of VH1′s and and writing a memoir,
With so many people struggling with addiction, it’s inspiring to hear from people who battled substance abuse problems for so long and won. Why not attend tonight, and catch a little of that inspiration in person?
