A Michigan man’s effort to help protect the health of others has turned out to benefit his own life.

Livingston County’s Ronnie St. Charles said he bought a defibrillator 12 years ago for Ogihara Stamping while working there as a health and safety director. He said he never thought it would have to be used, but still gave training to the company’s 350 employees just in case.

But on Feb. 1, a coworker noticed St. Charles slumped down.

“At second glance, I noticed he was going down a little deeper than he needed to. I mean, his head came down to rest on his keyboard,” Brian Kaitner said.

Kaitner said he and another coworker, George Cook, noticed St. Charles was blue around the lips and didn’t have a pulse. Kaitner said he called 911 and then rushed to get the defibrillator.

Kaitner said he put into action the training St. Charles had given him and shocked him twice himself before emergency responders arrived.

St. Charles was rushed to a hospital, where doctors told him he had suffered a heart attack. He returned to work two months later with a clean bill of health and gratefulness for his coworkers.

“There’s no words, actually, that I can say. Except, ‘Thanks,’” St. Charles said.

He said he is planning to get a second device for the company.
