More than 100 court complaints in France allege intentional manslaughter and injury caused by a diet pill banned in 2009, a lawyer for the alleged victims says.

The lawyer for the victims’ association, Jean-Christophe Coubris, says the diet pill Mediator, manufactured by Servier, was prescribed for three decades to several million French patients, and is alleged to have caused the deaths of as many as 2,000 people, Radio France Internationale reported.

Coubris says there are hundreds more complaints in the pipeline and he estimated there will be several thousand complaints in all.

The French company Servier has denied the allegations and says only three people have died after taking the medication, but it has also said it was ready to “face up to its responsibilities if need be,” RFI reported.
